About Me

Doctor or Writer?

I enjoyed writing from my schooldays and wrote a short story for my school magazine. Then at medical school a slightly better one. During my 42 years as a GP (family doctor) my time and energy was largely devoted to the job but I was doing research with colleagues at my local university, the University of Surrey, UK. Writing up your research for learned journals can be a thankless task. Editors and reviewers ask you to make changes then reject you, then the next journal asks you to make changes that reverse what the previous journal suggested. My two books with Cambridge Scholars are about Nutritional Medicine but in "An Introduction to Nutritional Medicine" I have used a fictional stratagem to introduce each chapter - a short dialogue between Charles Darwin and Hippocrates (see logo). Now that I have given up both medicine and research, the floodgates of fiction have opened and I have published three books: two science fiction novels and a book of short stories. My late father told me I should write about things I know, especially my experiences as a GP and some of the short stories are based on my own experiences. I really and truly loved my patients. When my writing is in full flood, I am enveloped in a warm cloud of happiness interspersed with moments of pure ecstasy.
